Artist Statement

I begin a painting with random blade strokes of color to see how colors react with each other.
The haphazardness (or haphazard mess) of these scrapings creates variations in pigment and
shape that hint at structure.
This can be developed further with brush strokes and layers of color.
The challenge, for me, is to recognize some sort of composition that unifies these random color
structures.
My goal is to create an investigative space for the eye to travel, to meander the painting
searching for some identifiable order. Meaning is discovered rather than intended.
I want the viewer to stare at the painting as he/she would stare out of a window while thinking of something else.
